American Mothers, Inc., an NGO in special consultative status with the UN, celebrates the recent agreement and landmark code at the United Nations to combat violence against women and girls.

American Mothers, Inc., along with some 6,000 non-government groups was in New York for the Commission on the Status of Women meeting. Cheers and wild applause erupted when the accord was announced in the UN headquarters late Friday.

The last attempt by the UN commission to agree on a declaration on violence against women in 2003 ended in failure.

"The commission urges states to strongly condemn all forms of violence against women and girls and to refrain from invoking any custom, tradition or religious consideration to avoid their obligations with respect to its elimination," said the declaration.

It added that states should "devote particular attention to abolishing practices and legislation that discriminate against women and girls, or perpetuate and condone violence against them."

Countries should "address and eliminate as a matter of priority domestic violence," went on the declaration.

American Mothers, Inc. supports the vigilant fight against domestic violence and actively promotes efforts to break this destructive cycle of violence perpetrated against women and girls.

AMI Marketplace!

<itunes:author>admin</itunes:author>

Do you sell a product or service? Established by JC Penny during the Great Depression, its mission was to recognize our nation's mothers by annually honoring their tireless dedication to children and families. Women from across the country were nominated by their peers for making a positive difference and inspiring those around them to do the same.

Today, we remain thankful for these strong American mothers and role models. Whether she be a stay at home mom, working mom, new mom or grandmom, her tireless commitment to children and families strengthens the very fabric of our nation. And, for that, we give great thanks!

Our UN Delegate, Dianne Callister, is in New York representing AMI at this session of the General Assembly. The following statement was issued on behalf of AMI:

American Mothers, Inc. (AMI), an organization with special consultative status at the UN, recognizes that mothers are confronting a global crisis. Domestic violence is among the top killers of mothers around the globe and the most dangerous threat facing women today. Statistics show that 1 in 4 women have been abused, and children born in the culture of violence are more likely to continue that cycle. AMI believes that human rights are mothers’ rights and seeks to advocate for justice and empowerment of mothers. AMI calls for an end to the culture of shame and silence surrounding violence in the home. AMI has been invited to participate in a high level meeting at the UN on the Rule of Law during the General Assembly. Working in collaboration with the United Nations, AMI is committed to valuing, elevating and empowering mothers to break the cycle of violence for future generations.
