Puerto Rico Moms Reach Out to Comfort Those in Need

During her most recent visit with the members of the Puerto Rico Association, Dianne Callister, 2010 National Mother of the Year, volunteered at the Puerto Rico Ronald McDonald House of Charities.  The Puerto Rico Ronald McDonald House program provides a “home-away-from-home” for moms and dads so they can stay close to their hospitalized child at little or no cost.  The Ronald McDonald houses are built on the simple idea that nothing else should matter when a family is focused on healing their child. The House hosts moms as guests when they can’t afford to pay a hotel or a boarding house, they provide them with free meals, and also a bed where they will lay their head at night to rest.

Many families travel far from home to get treatment for their seriously ill or injured children. Often, it can be a long time to be away from home. For children facing a serious medical crisis, nothing seems scarier than not having their mom and dad close by for love and support.

The picture shows the meal prepared and served by members of the Puerto Rico Association of American Mothers.  The menu for that Wednesday was rice, beans, friend plantains, and chicken/potatoes stew.  Headed by Elba Ruiz, 2010 Puerto Rico Mother of the Year, the Puerto Rico Association has prepared meals every Wednesday for many years.
