For the last 34 years, Puerto Rico’s Asociacion Mayaguezana de Personas con Impedimentos (AMPI) has sought to develop and provide direct services programs for a very specific and vulnerable population; adults with developmental disabilities. CEBRAIS is a daily activities center where parents drop off their adult children or AMPI provides transportation for them. In a very beautiful and specifically developed safe environment, they participate in sensory stimulation activities, recreational activities, individual sessions that might include speech and occupational therapy, they are provided with a healthy meal, the staff works on modifying some of the negative traits that make them less apt to be part of the community, and above all, provide them with a safe and sound environment. While they receive these services, their parents, whose age range between 55 and 85, get a much needed respite time.
Asociacion Mayaguezana de Personas con Impedimentos (AMPI) is one of the eight non-profit organizations that received a Golden Rule Grant this year.
