It’s only November, but our 82nd National Convention will be here before you know it! We hope you are making plans to attend. This year’s convention committee has been hard at work putting together an exciting schedule that incorporates everyone’s favorite events, yet branches out to include time for moms to network, learn about relevant issues impacting families across the country and share best practices.
Schedule of Events
On Sunday, the National Board of Directors will hold their quarterly business meeting followed by the General Business Meeting of the organization. Each state association is eligible to send to delegates to vote on the business at hand, while any member of the organization is most welcome to attend. This will be followed by the “always fun” opening reception of the convention.
Also on Sunday evening, the honorees will have a meet and greet and will film a short video where they will be asked a question on what other topic than… Motherhood!
Front and center on Monday morning will be the honoree speeches followed by the Literacy Lunch which recognizes the winner of the American Mothers National 5th Grade Essay Contest. At the lunch, we will also feature our moms who are published authors. Are you an American Mothers author? Let us know! The Legacy Tea will also take place Monday afternoon. This event celebrates our heritage and will give a special shout out to previous honorees and those who have attended multiple AMI conventions! Monday night is a free mom’s night out and there will be lots of suggested activities to take advantage of in our nation’s capitol with your new mom friends from across the country.
Tuesday begins with an Eggs and Issues breakfast where Congressional leaders and experts will speak on issues impacting moms and children, specifically human trafficking and the opioid epidemic. Breakfast will be followed by panel discussions on topics of interest to moms and our membership culminating with our Mother of Achievement Lunch. At this time, notable women from across the country will be celebrated and recognized for their philanthropic efforts to positively impact mothers, children and families. Tuesday afternoon, convention attendees will head to Capitol Hill to meet with their legislative leaders before heading back to attend the Motherhood Gala where the 2018 National Mother of the Year® will be named.
This year’s convention co-chairman, Lizzy Conroy, when asked about the event said, ”I had no idea what to expect last year when I learned I would be coming to convention, and I walked away with a renewed sense of purpose, joy and community among some of the greatest moms in our nation.”
Lela Sullivan, convention chairman, had the following to say about this annual event: “Returning to the American Mother’s Annual Convention each year brings joy to me. This event is a place where new friends become best friends and where old friends renew the happiest times of friendship…friendships made through association with wonderful mothers from throughout all of America. I am thankful each day for being a part of an organization whose mission is to honor, to serve and to educate. I am forever thankful that my daughter introduced me to American Mothers. Please join us and renew friendships as we honor Mothers. Hoping to see you there.”
