Meet Brittany Stewart-Lyons, 2023 North Carolina Mother of the Year®

March 14, 2023

About

Brittany Stewart was born and raised in Durham, North Carolina. In her life, she has overcome many obstacles and has never allowed anything to step in her way. At just three years old, Brittany lost her father to a tragic accident. Brittany grew up in the church, singing at a young age and working with youth. In 2014, Brittany married her middle school sweetheart, Minster William, and had her first child, Carter. She graduated with a bachelor’s in psychology in 2015 and a master’s degree in science in 2021, while also raising six kids. Currently, Brittany is enrolled in a Ph.D. program in psychology where she is chasing her dream of becoming a child psychologist. Her goal is to help children and adolescents recognize the different behaviors they face day-to-day while teaching them different techniques on how to deal with them. At the end of 2022, the Stewart-Lyons family welcomed the arrival of baby lucky number seven.

What surprises you most about being a mom?

What surprised me the most about being a mom was how you walk into motherhood already with superpowers! When I had my first child, I was clueless and didn’t know if I was prepared. Once I had the baby everything changed, physically, mentally, and emotionally. There was a sense of love like no other!

Who has been impactful in your journey as a mother

The women in my family have impacted my motherhood journey the most. Watching them all take different paths is interesting. The lesson that I carry is we all are not going to do things the same way and we may not all have the same outcome but the bigger picture and what will always remain the same is the LOVE!

What continues to inspire you in your motherhood journey?

My kids continue to inspire me daily! They make me what to continue to better myself. I strive every day to be a mom they can look up to, a mom they are proud of, and a mom who always does what’s best for her children. I know that there is always 7 sets of beautiful bold eyes watching me.

How has being a mom shaped your life?

Being a mom has shaped my life in so many ways, It made me stronger when I thought I was so weak. It gave me a true sense of worth and purpose, allowing me to understand that someone is watching my life and learning from it. Life shifted my priorities and taught me patience not only with others but with myself. My heart smiles at the little things, like my child learning to use the potty for the first time. Life is just some much happier.

Share one of your favorite stories from motherhood.

One of my favorite stories is about my children asking how a baby gets into my stomach. Because they go to a Christian academy, Carter believes that dad and I play fight and the baby just appears and Harmonee believes that you have to just keep eating and eating and it happens. My sweet Liam says that the Bible says we are to ask and we shall receive, knock and the door shall be open. It’s always exciting to hear their responses.
