Meet Jennifer Schmaltz, 2023 Connecticut Mother of the Year®

February 1, 2023

About

Jennifer Schmaltz was raised in Wolcott, Connecticut, where she still resides with her husband Michael “Mick” Schmaltz Jr., two sons Parker (8) and Logan (5), her dog Sawyer and her cat Luna. She works full-time as the Assistant Town Clerk in Wolcott. She is a board member of the Wolcott Youth Football and Cheer Association and Vice President of the Wolcott Volunteer Fire Department Company 2 Ladies Auxiliary. In her spare time, she enjoys gardening, which has been a recent hobby. She also enjoys camping and goes on multiple trips a year. She is just starting her journey into the world of reading and joined a Book of the Month app. When she isn’t at work you can find her with her family. Her boys are her whole world and she tries to spend as much time with them as possible. Her favorite tradition is family movie night on Sundays.

Who has been impactful in your journey as a mother?

I have been lucky to have multiple important women that have impacted me. My mom has always been someone I could look up to. She cooked homemade meals, helped with homework, gave advice and lended a listening ear. I had two amazing grandmothers. One was soft spoken, sweet, and tender. She always put the tea kettle on when you walked through the door and wanted to hear all about my life. My other grandmother was boisterous, feisty, and funny. She always had the disc changer playing with various artists blaring and would sing and dance while she cooked or baked.

What continues to inspire you in your motherhood journey?

I am continuously inspired by my children’s growth. I love seeing them become their own people. On a day-to-day basis, my boys are learning and shaping themselves. It is amazing to see who they are becoming. I look at their schoolwork that comes home and I am so proud of the knowledge they have. They excel in school, they work so hard in sports, they have so many friends and are such loving creatures. They inspire me to be and do better. Whether it is a good day or a difficult day, they make my life worth living.

How has being a mom shaped your life?

Being a mom has shaped my life in ways I never knew could be possible. I never realized you could worry about a human being so much. Everything you do can affect your children. Their accomplishments become more important than your own. Their needs are your top priority, and you don’t think twice about it. You have never felt love, pride, nervousness or truly scared until you’ve felt them for your child. From the moment my feet hit the ground in the morning until I’m asleep, my boys are my number one concern.
