Golden Rule Movement

American Mothers is the voice of 85 million mothers in America. Since 1935, we have been the official sponsor of Mother’s Day and the annual Mother of the Year® award. Our programs support moms and their families at home, at work and in the world. Honoring the mission of the organization’s founders, American Mothers is dedicated to improving the lives of mothers and children in the United States and around the world and has established the Golden Rule Movement with the Golden Rule Grant to honor this legacy.

Our History Celebrates the Golden Rule

The idea of a mothers committee began in 1931 when Eleanor Roosevelt announced the formation of a nationwide program for the better observance of Mother’s Day that would help dependent mothers and needy children. Sponsored by JC Penney’s Golden Rule Foundation, the Golden Rule Mother’s Day Committee established a fund to promote a “Golden Rule observance of Mother’s Day.” By 1933, committees were formed in most every state and expressed the philosophy that “the truest tribute that can be paid to a Mother is to share with others the love that she so generously and often sacrificially lavished upon us.” The funds established were distributed to local hospitals, homes for the aged, orphanages, churches and other welfare agencies to be used where needed most. Today, American Mothers continues to honor this legacy through the Golden Rule Movement with the Golden Rule Grant.

Golden Rule Movement

The Golden Rule Movement encourages moms to do what they do best, teach kindness to others. The Golden Rule Movement creates a more positive and empathetic culture in America by empowering, educating, and inspiring women to lead by example and model kindness and compassion through volunteerism and acts of service in their local communities. The Golden Rule Movement provides a platform for women who embody the selfless, caring spirit of motherhood, and who are using that maternal energy to make the world a better place.

American Mothers is helping encourage this Movement by providing charitable and communications support for programs which benefit mothers and children through the Golden Rule Grant.

Golden Rule Grant Fund

The Golden Rule Grant provides an avenue where American Mothers can implement our mission and values by supporting other non-profit organizations as they provide services for the common good of mothers and children.

Who Is Eligible To Receive Grants:

Only nonprofit 501(c)(3) organizations involved in projects that provide health and human services and civic and community programs that impact mothers and/or children will be considered to receive a Golden Rule Grant. Annually the current State Mothers of the Year and the National 5th Grade Essay Contest Winner recommend nonprofit organizations to be considered. Up to six (6) Golden Rule Grants can be awarded each year to nonprofit organizations that serve in the following categories:
  • Military – an organization that supports active duty, veterans, or families of a member of the military.
  • Survivor – an organization that aids and supports women and children who have endured difficult circumstances, such as abuse, addiction, mental, emotional or physical issues, etc.
  • Education – an organization that encourages and supports education for adults and children, especially if they are challenged financially, mentally, emotionally, and/or physically.

We are so grateful for the generous support the Golden Rule Movement and Golden Rule Grants have received over the years. Every dollar of each donation is used to develop the kindness and service mission of American Mothers, Inc., including funding the Golden Rule Grants.
